central park from an airplane window

Man, America has some serious inferiority issues.

Legend says the only reason we built New York City’s Central Park was to spite Europeans who, at the time, said our country lacked cultural refinement.

Refine this! To show off our cultural superiority, the city of New York acquired 840 acres in the center of Manhattan and evicted 1,600 squatters and legitimate renters in the name of “refinement”.

Ironically, the work that was done to spite the Europeans was done by Europeans. Thousands of immigrant laborers worked 10-hour shifts for a dollar to a dollar fifty per day to build the park, which first opened to the public in 1858.
